About the role

Location: Pune, India

Reports to: Senior Engineering Manager Team size: 5-6 direct reports; 15-20 indirect (via leads/senior engineers) Employment type: Full-time Experience: 10+ years total

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a team building software for building management and controls, including platforms that connect, monitor, and optimize HVAC, energy, lighting, and other building systems. You'll manage 5-6 direct reports and provide technical and delivery leadership across a broader group of 15-20 engineers, using Java, .NET, Kafka, and Angular. You'll partner with Product, Architecture, QA, and Embedded/Controls teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure solutions.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, coach, and grow direct reports (leads and senior engineers) and extend your influence to the wider 15-20 member team through them
  • Hire, onboard, and retain strong talent, and build a high-trust, high-performance culture in the Pune team
  • Own end-to-end delivery: roadmap planning, sprint execution, risk management, and dependency management across teams
  • Guide architecture and design across Java and .NET services, Kafka-based event streaming, and Angular front ends
  • Oversee design and operation of Kafka pipelines handling telemetry and events from building devices and controllers (topic design, partitioning, schema management, consumer lag, fault tolerance)
  • Drive integration with building automation protocols and systems (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, MQTT, OPC UA) and IoT/edge gateways
  • Ensure quality, reliability, and security for systems that interact with physical infrastructure, including alarms, scheduling, and device commissioning workflows
  • Champion engineering best practices: code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and secure coding
  • Manage technical debt, modernization, and migrations (e.g., legacy .NET to modern .NET, monolith to microservices)
  • Work with global stakeholders and distributed teams, aligning priorities across time zones
  • Report on delivery, team health, and engineering metrics to the Senior Engineering Manager and leadership

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 10+ years of total software engineering experience, with 3+ years managing engineers or leading teams
  • Experience managing or leading a team of 15-20 engineers, including through leads/managers
  • Strong hands-on background in Java (Spring / Spring Boot) and .NET (C#, ASP.NET Core)
  • Solid experience with Apache Kafka (event-driven architecture, stream processing, Kafka Connect, Schema Registry)
  • Working knowledge of Angular and modern front-end practices (TypeScript, RxJS)
  • Experience designing microservices, REST APIs, and distributed systems
  • Domain experience in building management systems (BMS/BAS), building controls, or IoT/industrial automation
  • Proven record of delivering complex projects with cross-functional and globally distributed teams
  • Strong coaching, performance management, and stakeholder communication skills

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of building protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, MQTT, OPC UA) and HVAC/energy management concepts
  • Experience with time-series data, telemetry platforms, and analytics/fault detection
  • Cloud experience (Azure, AWS, or GCP), Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with SQL/NoSQL databases and time-series stores (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, InfluxDB, TimescaleDB)
  • Understanding of cybersecurity standards for OT/IoT environments (e.g., IEC 62443)
  • Experience with edge computing or firmware/controls team collaboration
  • Agile/Scrum experience at scale
